Roofing contractors receive more than 7,000 complaints each year on average, but 2010 saw a 40 percent increase in filings.Consider that one company — American Shingle — received 1,000 complaints before filing for bankruptcy! This is simply unacceptable, but until greater oversight becomes standard and legislation is passed, we aren’t likely to see the number of Shawnee Mission roofing scam artists decrease. Common Scams

1. A roofing storm chaser comes to town, completes the job and leaves the state. When homeowners find there are problems with the new roofing — such as leaks or ripped off shingles — the company cannot be located and the homeowner is simply out of luck.

2. The homeowner finds a bid that is considerably lower than all the other bids, but goes with it anyway. Later, the homeowner finds that the workmanship was shoddy, the materials used were the cheapest and the roofing job simply does not last. Case in point: you get what you pay for! Price should not be the bottom line.

3. Typically, thecontractor significantly underbids the project. Once the initial quote is done and the contract is signed, the contractor completes half the job and then claims he has “discovered” something new that will cost thousands of dollars extra. A good contractor always factors in a few unanticipated snags when providing an estimate.

4. The company does not include cleanup in their cost. They’ll leave roofing debris all over the rooftop, the driveway and the yard, refusing to pick it up. Homeowners are left angry and befuddled, unsure of how to dispose of all the mess.

5. An uninsured contractor who gets hurt on your property could suddenly turn around and sue you for his injuries. Just because a company says they’re insured, doesn’t mean it’s true. Ask for proof.

6. Contractors often make exaggerated claims about how long they’ve been in business or what quality materials they use. Be sure you know precisely who you’re dealing with by looking up the company’s track record with the Better Business Bureau.

7. Some contractors ask for huge downpayments and leave the roof exposed, without ever finishing the work.
